The meat manufacturing company has commissioned Voltec with the installation of a new cogeneration system control.

The Lleida-based engineering firm VOLTEC ELECTROSISTEMES has been commissioned to install the supply system for the control and regulation system, the electrical power and control panels and has also implemented the installation of a new electrical cogeneration system for the ARGAL Food Production Group in its factory in Miralcamp (Lleida). The company is a benchmark in Spain as a meat manufacturer, renowned for both the quality of its produce and its innovative capacity.

With the three-fold aim of achieving important energy savings, reducing environmental impact and pollution and reducing primary energy consumption to help benefit profits, ARGAL has installed a 2-MW GE Jenbacher cogeneration system at 6.3 kV, which operates by using heated exhaust gases and engine cooling water.

VOLTEC’s contribution to this improvement has centred on the control of the installation, which involved the use of an ALLEN-BRADLEY COMPACT LOGIX PLC, on which the system’s control algorithm was developed.

This PLC, in addition to the control of all the system components, is linked via PROFIBUS communication with the motor-generator group. A MODBUS communication link was also installed with medium voltage equipment (2 General Electric F650 relays and two network analysers) that allow the control and switching systems for the medium voltage cells. A PROFIBUS communication system was also installed with boiler -regulation components.

Finally, all these control systems are operated and managed through the use of a SCADA system using ETHERNET communication with the PLC responsible for viewing and recording variables and the man-machine interface.
